Chasing Colour in Katong: A Walk Through Singapore’s Vibrant Past

Published on 31 July 2025 at 16:49

Earlier this month, I found myself wandering through the charming neighbourhood of Katong in Singapore, camera in hand and no real destination in mind. It’s one of those places where you don't need an itinerary—just a sense of curiosity and an appreciation for colour, culture, and character.

This image captures one of my favourite discoveries of the day: a stunning row of restored Peranakan shophouses, each painted in a different pastel hue, lined up proudly under the clear blue sky like a living rainbow. From buttery yellows to bubblegum pinks and baby blues, every façade is its own story—intricate details, louvered shutters, and decorative tiles whispering tales of a bygone era.

What struck me most wasn’t just the visual impact (though, let’s be honest, it’s hard not to stop and stare), but the feeling of timelessness. Amidst the fast-paced modernity of Singapore, Katong holds onto its heritage with care and grace. These houses aren’t just Instagram-worthy—they’re real homes, steeped in history, and part of the unique cultural mosaic that defines the Peranakan identity.

Walking these streets reminded me why I love travel photography. It’s not just about chasing landmarks; sometimes it’s about slowing down, taking in the little things, and capturing the soul of a place. Katong, with its mix of old-world charm and colourful flair, gave me a quiet moment of wonder—and a bold splash of inspiration.
