Last year, I wandered through the enchanting town of Metz, in France, and one image still defines the memory: the Moselle River rushing past, whitewater sparkling in the sun, with elegant buildings leaning toward the water as if listening to its song. On the right, the Taverne Flammekueche stood proudly with its glass-enclosed terrace, inviting us to pause and taste the region’s famous dish. The bridge in the distance, with its graceful arches, tied together the natural flow of the river and the artistry of the town.
Impressions of Metz
Metz charmed me with its blend of serenity and liveliness. The architecture is quietly grand—balconies framed with wrought iron, facades glowing in the afternoon light, and streets that open into bustling squares. It’s a town that whispers: slow down, but stay awake to beauty.
Travel Tips for Metz
- Best Time to Visit: Spring and early autumn are ideal. The weather is pleasant, and the riverside cafés are alive without being overcrowded.
- Where to Eat: Don’t miss flammekueche at riverside taverns like Taverne Flammekueche. Pair it with a local wine from Lorraine for the full experience.
- Must-See Architecture: The Cathedral of Saint Stephen (or Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz) is a masterpiece of Gothic design, with some of Europe’s most stunning stained glass. Go in the late afternoon when the light transforms the interior (check out my previous blog post).
- Riverside Walks: Stroll along the Moselle near the old town bridges. It’s perfect for photography—especially if you love capturing reflections and atmospheric light.
- Hidden Corners: Explore the side streets around Place Saint-Louis. The arcades and medieval facades feel like stepping back in time.
- Getting Around: Metz is walkable, but renting a bike lets you explore the riverbanks and parks more freely.
Lasting Memory
As I left Metz, I carried more than photographs—I carried the feeling of being embraced by a town that values beauty and heritage. Metz reminded me that architecture is more than stone and glass; it’s a language of identity, a way for a place to speak to the heart.
